In reply to Sarah. Taking a few deep breaths while still in the same room may be more realistic. Or, you may decide to say, "Everyone back outside!" until you're in a better frame of mind to deal with the muddy shoe situation. Whatever will give you a chance to calm yourself before you react.

Hi! I like the idea of this but I wonder what you actually suggest doing after you say ‘your muddy shoes are making the floor dirty. This will need to be cleaned up. We will talk about it later ‘ ? Do you let them keep their muddy shoes on while you go calm down somewhere? Because that doesn’t seem very realistic to me with my kids. They would jump on the couch with them if I wasn’t there. And I’d definitely be more stressed with a huge mud mess to clean afterwards.

That is challenging. I highly recommend Ross Greene’s books and website (livesinthebalance.org), especially for older children who challenge rules.

I would like to continue to receive resources. I am surrounded by the conservative Christian community where I am constantly being told to hit my children. I refuse. But I need good tools to slow me to do firm (but loving and healthy) parenting. Looking forward to learning more!
