Hi! Thanks for reading! Getting kids to talk can be tricky. It depends on the kids, sometimes asking really specific questions may help: “What are you making in art?” or “Can you write a math problem for me to try?” or “Give me one of your spelling words and I’ll see if I can spell it!”

Sometimes, kids would rather be busy while they talk. Playing a game or basketball with a few questions thrown in here and there. Others would rather write, draw, or color about something that happened during the day.

Thank you for creating this website. I like your ideas, and have jotted down some of them. The trick for me is that I don’t have children, but I am a mentor kids between 7 and 18 years old. I usually establish a good rapport with them and we have fun together, but sometimes I wonder what is going on when I ask, “what are you learning in school now?” and the young ones say “I can’t remember.” Any thoughts on that?

I find time alone in the car with them is helpful or the rare nights we all get to sit down as a family and catch up. I think my hubby and I are definitely guilty of pressuring them to talk.
