This is a great article. Such a good message. To be able to forgive ourselves when we see areas for improvement in our parenting styles or just every day life situations with kiddos is a necessary skill to have. Our kids are learning and growing too, it's not always easy being the little one. <3 <3 <3

Yes! Sometimes it is the other people around us that are the problem. I'm sad that your son had to hear that message from her, but I'm thankful that you were able to remain calm!

Thanks for this article. My son very rarely has a public meltdown, but he is just as you described your daughter: slow to warm up to new situations/people and slow to get through big feelings. His last public meltdown was in the checkout at Sam's. I wish I would have just "abandoned ship" but I desperately needed the diapers I was buying for his little brother. I am proud that I remained calm, but the biggest problem was the strange woman in line next to us. She kept mimicking my son and then told him "you're an embarrassment to your mother." I am a very timid person, and I was so shocked I was even more speechless!

Very timely article. I just had to deal with this yesterday. Some days are just tough. I think it can be hard to do what you really know is best when you're in the thick of it.

I agree! I am always working on my parenting. I have bad days, sad days, hard days...and my kids are just as imperfect as I am. My main goal is to keep moving forward, learning and trying again.

Thanks for sharing your raw parenting experience. We have all had those!! I think it is harder for us who are child therapists. There is a tendency to put more pressure on ourselves, but really that's crazy - we are all still human!

Such an honest, heart-felt post. Thanks for sharing - we have all been there (well, at least any parent has!). I try to remember that when this happens to me, to ease my own embarrassment and follow through with my best parenting practices. And then there's always the 'abort', 'abandon ship' approach - leave the filled cart, mid-aisle, and carry them out kicking and screaming!
