That is a wonderful metaphor! I throw the cup of gasoline way to often with my middle child even though I KNOW it will backfire. I hope I remember this next time there is a need… which will probably be tonight. We both feel so much better when I remember to use the cup of water. Thanks!

Hi,
Is the next class full, as it appears to have a waiting list. Or will there still be availability to join? I am am mom of a soon to be 4 year old daughter and my son is 6. We’ve had some rough times as a family as my husband and I have been separate for almost 3 years, and I think those struggles have played a part in my sons behavior which I am most concerned about. I would love to have some suggestions or advice. Or tips as to how to locate a therapists in our area.

Great question! In this example, you might say, “Woah, Ok, I can hear that you are all upset by my announcement.” (Empathy)

Then, you could say, “I realize I sprung this on you, and the TV needs to be turned off soon. What would be a good stopping point?” (Empathy and group problem solving)

Or, “I can hear that you’re upset, but the words you’re using are disrespectful. Can you ask for what you need using respectful words?” (assuming they know a better way to ask or more TV time)

Or, “Wow! I can see this is important to you. What are you watching anyway?” (getting into their world, calming the atmosphere, the “fire”)

Or, “I know you guys would love to watch TV all day. And, it’s time to turn it off for today.” (Setting a limit with empathy)
