In reply to <a href="https://imperfectfamilies.com/anxious-child-teach-them-to-be-bossy-with-worries/#comment-12899">Jill</a>.

I'm so sad to hear this. I think you're on to something, some tummy aches are definitely linked to anxiety in children. This is just one of many techniques used to combat feelings of worry or anxiety in children. In your grandson's case, I would not suggest this technique. Instead, I would suggest working on emotion identification and helping him express what he's feeling. Since he's so young, this will probably not happen with his words, rather with play or art. You probably don't have the authority to take him to counseling, but it might be a helpful step at some point.

Here are some other suggestions: https://imperfectfamilies.com/2014/10/13/helping-kids-manage-anxiety-art/ or https://imperfectfamilies.com/2013/02/13/beyond-take-a-deep-breath-helping-your-anxious-child-practice-calming-strategies-at-home/

I'm so thankful that he has such an insightful and caring grandmother!

I think my 5 year old grandson may be worried about whether or not his dad loves him :( When dad is tired, ill or fed up he is very snappy and says degrading things to his child. I am starting to see some anxious behaviours (tummy aches) in the child so is teaching him how to be bossy really a way to address this issue? This is tearing me apart.

I love this idea! Anxiety can easily run away with one's ability to be in control and I love the idea of bossing the anxious thoughts away. This will work well for adults too! :)
