My son struggles with this and I often don't know how to respond. I'm trying to help him feel more proud of himself. Of course I am proud of him, but I want him to be proud of himself too, so that he doesn't rely on other people's approval so strongly. And it's a challenge! Thank you for these suggestions!

Oh I am definitelly pinning and sharing this on my own social media sources. This is something I've struggled with so much as a parent with a child who has obvious anxiety's and it now seems this line of negative thought. He doesn't say it...but I've seen it written down on things. Like drawings that he'll also have comments on. It's very upsetting to see as a mom and I'm not always sure what to do as he's the oldest and this is new territory for me. So thank you.

Please check out Kidpower.org! We teach a number of skills to kids that can help with exactly this issue. Especially for younger kids, the 'Kidpower Trash Can' is a wonderful technique that teaches them to literally grab mean words (even the words already inside your head or your heart), throw them into a trashcan, and replace them with something positive. It can make a huge difference for kids (and teens and grown-ups!) that need some practical help with this!
