Hi! Power struggles are tough. In general, it sounds like this pattern needs to be interrupted. So, that might mean that instead of waiting in the rain, you get in the front seat and flip through a magazine or something while he's crawling around the car. When he's ready he can ask for your help. Sounds like giving in, but really, you're just refusing to participate in the power struggle. You'll still get what you want (him buckled in is seat), you'll just be less stressed in the process.

Another option would be to plan ahead. Tell him what you expect and get his buy-in, so "we're going to run into Target now, do you want to jump out of the car or do you want me to lift you out of the car like an airplane?" Then, you can do it again on the way back to the car, "We need to get going quickly today, so should we pretend that the car is a space ship and we're buckling our seatbelts for takeoff? I'll count down from 10 while you get buckled." You may also want to offer time to crawl around the car once you get home.

Finally, you could talk about it with him. "So, getting in and out of the car is really hard for us. Can you help me think of a way to get buckled and unbuckled quickly?" Offer a few silly ideas at first, then one or 2 serious ones. See if he can think of any to add. Then pick one to try. Usually, once the novelty of the situation has gone away, it's no longer an issue.

I hope you find something that works!

Thanks for commenting! True...life is busy and those teachable moment's slip away from us sometimes. Like you said, it's a goal to work toward. Good luck!

I love the advice in this article. It helps so much when practical examples are given with workable solutions rather than just a list of what not to do. I wonder what advice you would give when the disobedience involves refusing to do something that needs to be done right then. My 4 year old and I are in an ongoing power struggle about getting in and out of the car. He'll either refuse to get in or out or he'll demand I wait for him to do the straps himself before I can do the final snap (that he can't do). It often leads to me standing in the rain in a parking lot while he's crawling around in the car refusing to sit down. Bleh.

I love your point of waiting for a teachable moment when everyone involved is calm. It's easier to snap to a discipline method right then, but I know I would be the same way if I were to be corrected in the moment. It fuels my fire! But after a little while of thinking I realize my wrongs and then usually speak out to whoever I treated wrongly. Then my problem with waiting is I forget because we're so busy! This is a great goal for our family to work on, thank you.

Your entire post makes perfect sense, and I have been trying to do more of this "teaching later" when everyone is more calm. My biggest struggle is how to diffuse the immediate situation. The exact situation you described above has happened in my house (or in the car after school, etc). My daughter's feelings get hurt and her older brother is picking on her. He's clearly jealous and is being mean in response. How do you end this confrontation peacefully so that you can teach later (especially in the car!)? I have tried just letting it diffuse on it's own, but it almost always escalates instead to the point of the younger one crying and the older one then calling her a baby. That, to me, is unacceptable and I struggle to deal with it successfully without getting upset, threatening, etc.

Your site was a miraculously discovery for me a few months ago during a horrible low point. I finally signed up for pay pal yesterday and now I have bought your book, but is it really $5.00 - are you kidding me? I couldn't bring myself to apply the 15% discount. You really deserve that 75 cents.
