We don't know what we know until we know it! In other words, you were doing the best you can and now you have a chance to make some changes! I love these ideas for a calming routine! Some people create a calming mood in the house too - turning off TV early, turning down some lights, even reading with only a small light on in the room. You can do baby massage or just give each of their muscles a little pressure as you say something like, "Let's say good night to your feet, now let's say good night to your leg..." Stay calm. Don't panic if they don't go for it right away. They will feel your tension and may react. Instead, just stay focused on creating a calm routine, even if it doesn't go as planned for a few nights.

I struggle quite a bit with bedtime routines. I have a 2.5 year old and a 1 year old. My older guy starts to link the routine with bedtime and revolts against me every time, even when the routine involves a treat/reward. I haven't needed a routine with my younger one and really should have started with him sooner because I'm having trouble getting him to sleep in his crib now! I guess it takes two kids before you realize how stupid you've been about sleep. I'm pregnant with number 3 and I have vowed to not be so stupid with this one! I'm going to start a routine with my boys and stick to it. Baths won't work for us as they are both hyper after baths. I plan to have cups of milk, brush teeth, go to bedroom, read books and go to sleep. We use white noise as well. Is there any other good calming techniques I should try?

[…] Bedtime is a struggle for many families. In our example family, bedtime was out of control. Their twin 5 year old girls complied with teeth brushing, pj’s and tuck-in time, but once the door was closed, the girls would start arguing. The arguing would get louder and louder until the parents attempted to intervene. Hi! Great question. If something is working well for you don't change a thing! :) I'm glad you have a routine that works!

Thank you for your great articles. Just a general question. We have a 4-year old who have a nice bedtime routine - nice, being that it works well for us. Just wondered the point you rose about no TV. I like to point out that we don't watch a lot of TV in our house. Thus our bedtime starts with one episode of Dora the Explorer, this is wind down time. From there on we proceed to her bedroom where we will read a Bible story and say a prayer and then its sleep time. Should we try and cut out the 'TV' part? Or can we continue with this routine?
