This is a fantastic article. I love how you focus on understanding what the child is trying to say, through the misbehavior. It's so important to help them learn more appropriate ways to deal with their feelings. And helping them learn the words to use really helps them.

It can be very frustrating to have a child that hits and kicks. We are starting daycare/preschool in the Fall and I'm worried that my child will be an aggressor, as he can be while we are at the park/playground.

We have been using books like "Hands are not for Hitting" "Feet are not for Kicking" with my son to open the conversation of using our words and not turning to negative actions to express feelings. There was also a tip to tell your child to bite themselves if they feel the need to bite - I used it and it worked like a charm. His reaction: "ouch, biting hurts!"

I really like this. Sometimes my son's aggression is shown through throwing things. We can tell when he is getting frustrated. It's hard in the midst of it to stop and think about what he is communicating. I really like these action steps and hope to work on integrating them into how we handle his aggressiveness.
