As a teacher I try to use this approach regularly, hopefully as my norm! It conveys your sincerity in caring and can be disarming if a person feels defensive or embarrassed.

I like to say, “I’m wondering about your most & least favorite classes/activities at school these days. Tell me what’s best first!” This approach breaks the ice with teens in particular!
