This post was super helpful! I noticed myself getting into the loop of asking my kids the same questions and not really listening to the answers. Then today, I realized I was saying the same things over and over again and none of my children were listening or responding. Its time to change the conversations in my home!

I too find joy in communicating more positively with children (of all ages)! As a teacher I try to use this approach regularly, hopefully as my norm! It conveys your sincerity in caring and can be disarming if a person feels defensive or embarrassed.

I like to say, "I'm wondering about your most & least favorite classes/activities at school these days. Tell me what's best first!" This approach breaks the ice with teens in particular!
