I realize this article is a few years old but hopefully I can get a response. How do you deal with something you need your child to comply with?
You give the child 5 minute warning that it will be time to go to bed. When the 5 minutes is up she won't go to bed or even up the stairs. Empathizing such as; I understand you want to play more. We'll leave your toys right here and you can play with them in the morning, etc. does not work. At 5 she is to big to carry up the stairs. And so the battle ensues. She throws herself on the floor and refuses to move. Finally I have to threaten her (no toy tomorrow) before she will get up. This seems to be the only thing that works.
This is a non-negotiable situation. She needs to go to bed when I say (when it is bedtime). So how would you deal with this situation?
Thank you

This can be tricky! If it turns into a power struggle, it's not going to solve the problem. But, if they're used to the idea and are usually compliant, it's probably worth a try!

Here's a post on picky eaters that has some other suggestions too.

About the peas, could you also offer that they eat at least part of them? I used to (and still do) tell my boys, "Just three more bites..." or something along that line. Sometimes that will jumpstart them into eating all of them, sometimes it is just three bites. We all want our kids to eat healthy and like vegetables, etc. but as an adult there are vegetables that I don't like. What is a good balance? Is giving them this alternative okay?

Hi! Our kids don't need to agree with us or see our side of the argument. In fact, it's pretty rare to hear a kid say, "you're right, mom, I get what you're trying to say." It is ok for them to feel disappointed or frustrated when we set a limit. Rather than trying to get them to see our side of the argument, we need to support them with empathy and offer to help them cope.

I can see the benefits of all of your suggestion but is there anything I can give to my 7 year old son (other than what you have already written) to get him to see my side of the 'argument'?

You might be surprised! Finding a middle ground is actually a skill that smart children can learn and use well. Especially if you're flexible and not focused on winning.

As if a disobedient child would willingly provide a positive middle ground alternative to a power struggle. When they say no, they mean no. You can offer options that lead to the same conclusion but for smart children who see through that, you re still going to get a NO. There is no way to side step that.

Wow, so much heartbreak and so many changes over the past year. I would suggest finding a child therapist in your area. (Ideally, someone who works with children and grief/loss or family medical issues) You can search Psychology Today or Good Therapy for therapists or ask your pediatrician for recommendations.
