The Importance of Slowing Down (even if you have to force yourself)

The Importance of Slowing Down

It’s summer! Most of us wait all year for the lazy days of summer.   Time to relax by the pool.   Take a vacation. Or sit in a hammock.

Instead, many parents spend their time shuttling their kids to and from soccer camp. Feeling obligated to create fun activities for their “bored” children. Or regretting the family vacation due to the number of complaints from the backseat.

Slowing down is an intentional choice.   Rather than being forced to fit into a schedule or feeling the need to respond to someone’s demands, slowing down gives you the chance to choose how you are going to spend your time.

One of the most important aspects of slowing down, is that it gives you the opportunity to reconnect with yourself and your children.   Most parents need to be intentional about spending quality time with their children.   Slowing down makes it easier to remember to play together, look them in the eye and listen.

Slowing down doesn’t need to mean sitting alone in silence.   It could mean taking a walk with your daughter. Playing volleyball as a family.   Or catching lightning bugs.

It’s not too late to slow down this summer.

Give yourself permission to stay a few more minutes at the bonfire.   Join your child on the swings.   Or cuddle a little longer at bedtime.

Life is busy.   Make time to enjoy it!
